Teaching

Teaching music is something most classical musicians do by choice or necessity, since there is always a demand for lessons in the most popular instruments and because it is difficult to make a living by performing or composing alone. Fortunately, I have always enjoyed teaching and in 1997 I was very happy to accept a full time teaching post as guitar instructor for Aberdeen City Council. In Aberdeen I teach guitar, bass guitar and ukulele to pupils from about the ages of 8 to 18, in council run primary and secondary schools. I also direct guitar ensembles and lead class projects involving singing, playing classroom instruments, musical literacy, sol-fa and other musical subjects. I teach in English and Scots Gaelic.

Given that I teach full time and wish to have an even work-life balance, I do not do a lot of private teaching outside of my schools. However I will consider requests from adults or younger guitarists for online teaching of extended range guitar, or from those studying classical guitar for grade 7 ABRSM/TCL or similar and above. If you need classical guitar lessons at this level, please use the Contact page to tell me what you need and I will answer by email. I do not teach pop/rock music, electric guitar or take beginners or intermediate level guitarists outside of the school system.
